Amazon is buying a “direct-to-consumer” retail service for $5 billion, the company announced Wednesday, as it continued to expand its online shopping empire in the U.S. Amazon is also acquiring a distribution network for its online retailer, and it said it would open its first U.K. store by the end of the year.
Amazon’s purchase of the direct-to, self-distribution Amazon Store service, called Amazon Direct, is part of a broader expansion of its retail business, as the company aims to become a major player in the $400 billion retail industry by the middle of next year.
The company will begin selling direct-from-home shopping at its retail stores later this year, according to the company.
Amazon Direct will have its first store in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle in the fall, and plans to open new retail locations in the first half of next decade.
It will also begin selling products at its stores as soon as this year.

Amazon will also offer a broad assortment of Amazon gift cards and Kindle e-readers.
Amazon also said it plans to launch a wide variety of new products and digital content through its Amazon Music platform in the coming months, which is available for free.
